That’s why, here at Unsworth, we have a dedicated team who drives and supports the growth of our apprenticeship programme. We recently had a catch up with Nathan Brooks, our Level 3 Freight Forwarding Apprentice – Check out what he had to say.

What made you decide to choose a career in freight forwarding?

I have always had an interest in logistics. I was keen to explore behind the scenes of the industry and understand the intricacies behind shipping. A career in freight forwarding was a natural choice; its fast-paced nature offers an ever-changing landscape where each day brings new opportunities for growth.

Why did you apply for an apprenticeship?

I was keen on learning and earning at the same time and knew an apprenticeship not only provided a gateway into the industry, but also offered a seamless introduction without the need for prior experience.

What fascinates you about this industry?

The fast-paced nature of the industry ensures there’s never a dull moment. From a global pandemic to a geo-political crisis in the Red Sea, there is always something happening that keeps us on our toes. Plus, the sheer volume of goods being transported at any one time is fascinating in itself.

What made you choose Unsworth?

Unsworth is celebrating its 50th year in business in 2024. The enduring presence in the industry and its local roots played a pivotal role in my decision. Its longevity is a testament to the way that they operate. Proximity means a shorter commute, but it's the company's unwavering commitment to excellence that truly sealed the deal.

Is the apprenticeship what you were expecting?

Absolutely. It not only taught me the ropes but also provided ample time and resources to excel in my educational journey too.

What is your favourite experience so far?

Mastering the job, getting praise from my manager, discovering new facets of the industry, and collaborating with remarkable colleagues make every day a rewarding experience.

What advice would you give to someone looking to join the industry?

Dive in, even at the entry level. Keep an open mind and embrace the journey, and before you know it, you’ll be climbing the ladder.

How did you find the recruitment process?

The Unsworth team were thorough yet transparent and the recruitment process at was a positive experience. The team kept me informed at every stage, showcasing their efficiency and professionalism.

Would you recommend the programme?

Without a doubt! It's a gateway to the industry, offering a rich learning experience. Highly recommended for those seeking a thorough introduction to the multifaceted world of freight forwarding.
